CRESTWOOD—Defending the school district’s policy of rationing water during practices and the school day, Crestwood High principal Debbie Grenier explained this week that children cannot be given water every time they say they need it, because, as every student knows, we must always remember the boy who cried wolf. “A kid will tell you he’s a little dizzy, he’s exhausted, he needs to stop what he’s doing and get a drink. Okay, fine. But how do you know he’s not just saying that?” said Grenier, who has always operated under the assumption that a child claiming to be thirsty is more times than not faking a bodily need just so he can take a break. “We’re a school committed to teaching character. And part of that character means learning you don’t get to cry wolf every time you’re a little uncomfortable.” By denying these requests for water, Grenier explained, the school was teaching an important lesson: that there would come a day when the boy would *really* need water—minutes from dying of thirst—but, having cried wolf one too many times, would find that nobody believed him, at which point he would be eaten by the wolf. Asked why a student would make something up like thirst—the same way the boy in the story made up the wolf—Grenier did not hesitate at all. “Simple,” she said. “To piss me off.” At press time, Grenier and the school board had conceded that water is, of course, necessary at times, but that it was not up to the children to say when.
